NEW POLLING: Home Insurance Costs Are Straining Household Budgets in Iowa

DES MOINES, IA—As more frequent and costly extreme weather fuels a nationwide home insurance crisis, Climate Power and the Insurance Fairness Project released new polling on how homeowners and renters are impacted in five key states, including Iowa, Nebraska, and Kansas. Key findings of the poll include:
- 75% are concerned about home insurance costs rising in the next 3 years.
- 51% say cost is their biggest concern with home insurance coverage.
- 26% have had to put off a purchase or expense due to insurance costs.
- 51% are concerned insurance costs will impact housing decisions.
- 48% identify increases in extreme weather as a factor driving up home insurance costs.
Climate change is pushing property insurance companies to raise rates and cancel policies in Iowa. Between 2020 and 2025, home insurance rates in the Hawkeye State increased by 96%. In 2025 alone, home insurance rates increased by 6% nationally, while Iowans saw rates increase by 14.7%, the third highest increase of any state in the country.
The increasing risk of wind and hailstorms in the state is a major driver of Iowa’s home insurance crisis and has been cited by insurance companies as a reason for dropping tens of thousands of Iowa customers. Meanwhile, Trump’s far-reaching tariffs and cuts to disaster relief will make Iowa’s home insurance crisis even worse.
“Extreme weather is fueling Iowa’s home insurance crisis, and Trump’s policies are only making it worse,” said Climate Power Senior Advisor Mia Logan. “This poll is just the latest example of what we already know: Iowans are struggling with the cost of living. We need leaders who will take action to make it easier for Iowans to buy groceries, fill their cars with gas, and insure their homes.”
