NEW REPORT: Costs are Up, Jobs are Down & Families are More Vulnerable One Year Into Trump’s Second Term

New report from Climate Power details how Americans are paying the price for Trump and Republicans’ reckless agenda

Washington, DC – One year into his presidency, a new report from Climate Power shows how Americans are worse off than they were a year ago thanks to Trump and Republicans. From skyrocketing utility bills, to his job-killing war on clean energy, tax breaks for Big Oil and special interests, or the gutting of protections for clean air and water, time and time again, Trump has put billionaires and corporate interests first – and it is everyday Americans who are paying the price. And now, Donald Trump has started an unlawful military conflict in Venezuela – putting American lives and taxpayer dollars on the line to benefit his corporate oil donors while failing to solve the affordability crisis here at home. 

Climate Power Senior Advisor Alex Witt issued the following statement: “From utility bills to groceries and health care, your life is more expensive than it was one year ago. Since the day he was sworn in, Donald Trump has made it absolutely clear that he’s working for his corporate donors instead of working people. He shipped jobs overseas, sent energy costs soaring, rolled back protections from dangerous pollution, and made our communities more vulnerable to extreme weather. Now, he’s doubling down on expensive foreign oil, while taking a sledgehammer to cheaper, cleaner energy here at home. Our report details all of the ways in which Donald Trump has made your life more expensive, your air and water dirtier, and your communities more vulnerable to disaster in just one year in office.” 

The report’s findings include: 

• Utility Bills Spiked: Far from fulfilling his promise to cut energy costs in half in his first year, Trump’s policies have led to household electric bills surging by 13%; residential gas prices have increased nearly 60%, directly contributing to utility companies raising rates by at least $85.8 billion on American families. 
• Jobs Are Down, Prices Are Up: Trump’s policies have destroyed more than 165,000 clean energy jobs, canceled enough renewable projects to power 13 million homes, and imposed tariffs that cost the average American household $1,100 in 2025 – compounding families’ financial burden.
• Trump Worsened The Home Insurance Crisis: President Trump, whose cost-raising agenda is worsening the insurance affordability crisis, has received more than $3.7 million in campaign contributions from the industry, and tariffs are expected to increase home insurance costs 38% faster by the end of 2025, with tariffs on construction materials alone increasing premiums in some states by more than $400 per year.
• Trump Protected Polluters: Trump gutted 31 pollution protections, forfeiting $275 billion in annual savings and up to 30,000 preventable deaths per year. In tandem, he played dangerous politics with disaster aid, raising the risks and recovery costs for communities facing extreme weather.
• Trump Gutted Disaster Preparedness And Response: Trump has gutted our federal disaster response and canceled funding for states to prepare for disasters – putting Americans at risk and pushing the financial burden of recovery onto states and local communities. Trump’s cuts have also made weather forecasting more difficult, degrading storm forecasts and threatening life-saving weather alerts.
