Washington, D.C. – Tomorrow, President Donald Trump is visiting a region in Texas with the worst air pollution from oil and gas in the country. During the Midland visit, he’ll skip meeting with communities suffering from the coronavirus or pollution. Instead, he’s going to tour an oil rig owned by one of his campaign donors.

Seriously.

Trump’s official schedule includes a speech at a Midland oil rig owned by Double Eagle Energy Holdings, whose cofounders, Cody Campbell and John Sellers, have contributed more than $60,000 to the Trump campaign’s joint fundraising committee, Trump Victory.

Trump will also hold a high-dollar fundraising luncheon in Odessa, where the minimum ticket price to attend is $2,800. For $50,000, donors can get a picture with the president.

The $2,800 per-head price is a bargain for oil and gas executives who have benefited from Donald Trump’s pro-pollution agenda. Trump prioritized coronavirus stimulus programs shaped by oil lobbyists to give more than $2 billion to oil and gas companies. The oil and gas industry in Midland and Odessa has received between $151.7 million and $366.3 million from the PPP program, according to data released by the Small Business Administration.

Double Eagle Holdings and its related entities received between $350,000 and $1 million from the Small Business Administration’s PPP program.

Since the beginning of March, Trump Victory has raised more than $1.7 million from Odessa and Midland donors—almost all of it from the oil and gas industry.

The Permian Basin is considered a coronavirus hot zone in Texas. Local news reports put the number of COVID-19 cases in the region at nearly 2,000.
