Washington, D.C. – Just one day after Trump’s trade war on our Canadian allies increased electricity bills for Americans by nearly $70, he’s at it again: declaring new tariffs on steel and aluminum that will further increase energy costs. Ironically, he’s also promising to declare an electricity emergency – which is being fueled by Trump’s own actions.
Climate Power Communications Director Alex Glass issued the following statement:
“Donald Trump’s presidency is an emergency for American consumers. He wakes up each morning and invents new ways to raise costs. Trump’s chaos and indiscriminate tariffs are spiking energy costs and leaving hardworking Americans with the bill.”
- Trump’s trade war is already projected to increase electricity bills for many Americans by nearly $70 per month.
- Tariffs on steel and aluminum are passed through to consumers with higher energy prices.
- Trump’s (other) tariffs will mean up to $2,000 in increased costs for the average American household.
- The Yale University Budget Lab released a report that estimates that Trump’s tariffs amount to a tax hike of $1.4 trillion to $1.5 trillion over 10 years and would disproportionately hit the poor.
- The CEO of Ford said that tariffs would “blow a hole” in the US auto industry.
