Trump Heading to Michigan While Tariffs Tear Up Our Economy

Lansing, MI – This week the Trump administration is once again forcing wild tariffs on Canada and other countries that only exacerbate the affordability crisis Michiganders are facing. As he prepares to visit Michigan on Monday, struggling consumers understand that these tariffs, the failed GOP budget bill, and his disastrous war in Iran make everything more expensive – from energy, to groceries, to gas. In fact, a new poll finds almost 2-1 opposition, with 63% of Americans opposing Trump’s tariff approach and only 37% supporting.
Here are just a few ways Michiganders are paying more for energy thanks to Trump and the GOP Congress’ tariffs:
- A report from the Center for American Progress (CAP) finds that nearly 4.2 million, or 82 percent, of Michigan electric customers will pay more for their electricity this year due to the Trump administration’s tariffs and grid fortification grant cancellations.
- In August 2025, the Trump administration announced additional steel, aluminum, and copper tariffs targeting clean energy, including a 50% steel tariff, that hit steel for wind turbines and copper used in EVs.
- The residential solar sector has been hit with a “triple-whammy” of slow market growth, IRA tax credit uncertainty, and tariffs.
Climate Power Michigan Director Tom Lenard issued the following statement:
“Trump’s policies are pissing off our neighbors and emptying our pocketbooks. When he’s here next week stumping for Mike Rogers and Congressional Republicans, they should be held responsible for making our bills too damn high.”
