Trump’s NOAA Layoffs Will Make Us Less Prepared for Disasters

Washington, D.C. — This week, as millions of Americans face extreme weather from California to the South, Donald Trump is laying off more than 1,000 employees from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). These layoffs will make us less prepared for extreme weather and put lifesaving alerts Americans rely on at risk.
Trump is following the Project 2025 blueprint, which calls to dismantle and privatize the National Weather Service, effectively putting free life-saving weather alerts behind a paywall.
Climate Power deputy chief of staff Molly Hill issued the following statement:
“Right now, millions of Americans are depending on free, reliable weather alerts to make decisions about when and how to evacuate in the face of disasters. Trump is putting Americans in danger by gutting these life-saving programs and selling them off for parts to his billionaire friends. When Americans are faced with life or death decisions, the last thing they should have to worry about is whether their information is reliable or getting past a paywall. These cuts will make us less safe and make our communities more vulnerable to weather disasters.”
