Energy Secretary Granholm’s South Carolina Visit Will Highlight How Biden Administration’s Clean Energy Plan is Turbocharging the State’s Economy

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Energy Secretary Granholm’s South Carolina Invest in America tour stop will spotlight how President Biden’s clean energy plan is turbocharging the state’s clean economy. By incentivizing clean energy investments, President Biden’s clean energy plan is putting good-paying jobs back in the hands of Americans, all while fighting climate change.

Thanks to President Biden’s affordable clean energy plan, South Carolina’s economy is thriving, and providing family-sustaining jobs to the state’s residents. According to Climate Power’s latest Clean Energy Jobs Report, in the months since the Inflation Reduction Act passed, $10.9 billion has been invested to turbocharge South Carolina’s economy, creating 11,060 new clean energy jobs. A majority of both jobs and investments—10,860 jobs and $10.81 billion in investments—are in the EV industry.

Here are just some examples of South Carolina’s turbocharged clean energy economy:

  • Scout Motors announced a $2 billion investment to build a Blythewood assembly plant, creating 4,000 jobs.
  • Redwood Materials announced a $3.5 billion investment to build a battery materials campus near Charleston, creating 1,500 jobs.
  • Envision announced a $810 million investment to build a gigafactory in Florence, creating 1,170 jobs.
  • Albemarle announced a $1.3 billion investment to build a lithium hydroxide production facility in Chester County, creating 1,800 jobs.

President Biden’s clean energy plan is invigorating the state’s economy. By some estimates, the landmark agenda is projected to increase South Carolina’s GDP by $4.8 billion and create more than 24,000 jobs in the state by 2030.
