MAGA HOUSE REPUBLICANS’ DEFAULT ON AMERICA ACT KILLS CLEAN ENERGY JOBS

Washington, D.C. – In response to MAGA House Republicans’ Default on America Act passing the chamber, Climate Power’s Executive Director Lori Lodes released the following statement:

“Today, MAGA House Republicans voted to raise energy costs for working families and kill American clean energy jobs. They chose to fight for an extremist agenda that lets Big Oil CEOs pollute and harm our communities, rather than support their constituents who stand to gain the most from our turbocharged clean energy economy.

“Let’s be clear: MAGA House Republicans wasted the country’s time to pass an extreme, unpopular plan that moves us no closer to avoiding default, and will never become law. This is bigger than politics. Our choices cannot be to default and destroy the economy or to destroy the clean energy economy and the hundreds of thousands of jobs it creates. President Biden and Congressional Democrats must continue to be responsible actors and hold strong to prevent default and stop Republican efforts to repeal the Inflation Reduction Act.”

The Default on America Act disproportionately harms communities in red districts. According to Climate Power’s new report, President Biden’s clean energy plan has helped create over 77,000 jobs in 72 GOP-held districts. And more than half of the projects moved forward since the passage of the Inflation Reduction Act are represented by House Republicans.
