New report from Climate Power shows that Trump’s war on clean energy has canceled enough projects to power more than 14 million homes
Washington, DC – Ahead of Trump’s State of the Union address, Climate Power’s Energy Crisis Snapshot shows nearly 173,000 clean energy jobs have been lost, put on the chopping block, or delayed since Trump took office. The job losses stem from 354 canceled or delayed projects, representing more than $61 billion in investments, which would have powered more than 14 million homes.
“As Trump prepares to address the country, the state of the union is more expensive thanks to his reckless energy policy,” said Climate Power Senior Advisor Jesse Lee. “Trump is sending jobs overseas, hiking up utility costs, and taking energy off our grid – and congressional Republicans are helping him do it. Last year, Democrats swept at the ballot box by staying laser-focused on rising energy costs, holding Republicans accountable for taking clean energy off the grid when we desperately need it. Vulnerable congressional Republicans should see flashing warning signs, but we’re willing to bet they’ll keep rubberstamping Trump’s agenda while their constituents see job losses and higher bills each month.”
Clean energy is cheaper and more reliable than fossil fuels, particularly in the extreme cold that millions of Americans experienced in the first month of 2026. But Donald Trump and Republicans have continued to prioritize billionaires over the needs of the American people by taking clean energy off the grid. At the same time, they’ve aggressively increased LNG exports, causing Americans to pay $12 billion more for natural gas in the first nine months of his second term than a year earlier.
The report’s findings include:
- Since Trump’s election, 354 clean energy projects or companies have canceled new projects, delayed new investments, laid off workers, or lost federal funding, stalling $61.41 billion in clean energy investment and 172,988 clean energy jobs between his election and February 17, 2026.
- The top 10 states that have lost the most jobs from Trump’s war on clean energy are:
- Texas
- Massachusetts
- Arizona
- New Jersey
- Michigan
- New York
- South Carolina
- Illinois
- Ohio
- North Carolina
- 89 congressional districts have been impacted by energy project cancellations, delays, or federal funding losses. 49.9% of impacted funding is in districts represented by Republicans, and 24.7% of impacted funding is in districts represented by Democrats.
- 53.7% of canceled projects and 50% of delayed projects are located in congressional districts represented by Republicans.
- Between November 2024 and November 2025 (the most recent data available), the cost of natural gas to generate electricity rose almost 50%.
- Newly released data from the Center for American Progress, the Natural Resources Defense Council, and Climate Power reveal the breadth of rising utility costs nationwide. Since Trump took office, gas and electric utilities have raised or sought to increase bills by more than $92 billion, affecting more than 112 million electric customers and more than 52 million gas customers across 49 states and the District of Columbia.
