Americans Face More Rate Hikes as Trump Takes Clean Energy Options Off the Grid

The rate hikes come as Trump drags the country into a dangerous and costly foreign war that has already spiked global oil prices
According to Climate Power’s February Energy Crisis Snapshot, Trump has canceled or delayed enough projects to power more than 14 million homes
Washington, DC – As Trump declares a “massive and ongoing” military action in Iran, Americans are already facing soaring utility bills thanks to his reckless energy policies. Customers in Michigan and Colorado could be facing new rate hikes as high as 14%. News also broke last week that Michigan’s largest utility company plans to request another rate hike just five days after an increase was already approved. Democratic Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel announced she plans to intervene.
Republican Representative Gabe Evans (CO-08), whose constituents could see their utility bills increase by as much as 11%, voted to take a sledgehammer to clean energy projects that would have lowered costs in Colorado. In Michigan, more than 300,000 SEMCO customers will face natural gas rate hikes as Trump aggressively pushes to export Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), driving those costs even higher. At the same time, Representatives Bill Huizenga (MI-04) and Tom Barrett (MI-07) voted to cut our energy supply even more by gutting clean energy projects across the country as demand soars. Forty-nine states and the District of Columbia saw rate hikes as high as $48.54 per month announced in 2025.
Climate Power Senior Advisor Jesse Lee issued the following statement: “Representatives Evans, Huzienga and Barrett were happy to help Trump gut domestic clean energy even though they knew it would raise costs, and now their own constituents are paying the price. Americans are fed up with being gaslit and told the economy is booming while opening higher utility bills each month. And now, given Trump’s reckless actions in Iran, the price of oil and gas are set to spike even higher. Every Republican who has cosigned Trump’s disastrous energy policies should be held accountable this November.”
Donald Trump’s reckless energy policies are causing utility rates to skyrocket across the country:
- The Texas Railroad Commission approved a natural gas rate increase for Texas Gas Service customers in El Paso that will raise monthly bills for small residential customers by $3 to $4, and larger residential customers by about $11.
- Kentucky Power submitted an application to the Kentucky Public Service Commission to add $4.59 to the average customer bill by 2029 to pay for the replacement of a cooling tower at one of its coal plants.
- The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio approved revised rate increases for FirstEnergy companies, which will go into effect on March 1. Illuminating Company customers were expected to see an $11.60 monthly increase and Ohio Edison customers were expected to see a $2.88 monthly increase.
- North Dakotans will see their electricity bills increase by nearly $12 per month after the North Dakota PSC approved a rate hike for Xcel Energy.
- The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission approved rate hikes for customers of Wellsboro Electric, Valley Energy, and Citizens’ Electric Co. of Lewisburg that will raise electricity prices by as much as 18%.
- Peoples Gas, which supplies natural gas to nearly 900,000 Chicagoans, is seeking a rate hike that would raise the average monthly bill by $10 to $11.
- Nicor Gas, which has 2.3 million customers in northern Illinois, is seeking a rate hike that would raise the average monthly bill by around $6.
- In North Carolina, Piedmont Natural Gas customers were upset about sudden increases in their monthly bills, with some ratepayers complaining that their bills had doubled.
- Atmos Energy is asking the City of Dallas to approve a 10% rate hike for gas customers that would raise the average monthly bill by $11.25.
