Trump Travels to Texas to Raise Utility Bills Even More
tags
Since Trump took office, at least 15 utilities in Texas enacted or proposed rate hikes totaling over $3.6 billion, affecting over 8.8 million customers
Trump’s disastrous policies have led to 28 clean energy projects stalled or canceled, more than 52,000 jobs lost, and nearly $7 billion in investments lost.
Washington, DC – Today, Trump will be in Texas with Governor Greg Abbott to gaslight Americans by claiming that the affordability crisis is over, despite the fact that his energy policies have sent utility bills skyrocketing. Trump will be in Corpus Christi, a major hub for the export of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), which he has aggressively pushed, causing utility bills to skyrocket by 8%. On top of that, thanks to his administration’s reckless energy policies, residential gas prices in Texas have increased by 86.84% under Trump’s watch.
Trump and Republicans like Senator John Cornyn have taken a sledgehammer to clean energy projects across the country, including 28 projects in Texas — which translates to more than 52,000 jobs lost in the Lone Star State. And Republican Governor Abbott has helped them do it. Instead of actually addressing the energy affordability crisis by bringing homegrown clean energy onto the grid, Trump is making empty promises on data centers that won’t do anything to lower energy costs.
Climate Power Senior Advisor Alex Witt issued the following statement: “Trump is heading to the Lone Star State to gaslight voters by claiming that the affordability crisis is over, but Americans are living in a different reality. While he makes backroom deals with his tech billionaire donors on toothless ‘pledges’ that companies can voluntarily choose to adhere to, American families are struggling to pay their utility bills thanks to his disastrous energy policies. Republicans like Senator Cornyn and Governor Abbott have happily rubber-stamped his job-killing agenda, even as it raises costs for Texans. This November, we’re going to make sure they pay the price at the ballot box.”
Trump and Republicans have left the Lone Star state with skyrocketing utility bills and pink slips:
- By 2035, Trump’s clean energy cuts were expected to increase Texans’ annual energy bills by $480, gasoline bills by $138, and wholesale electricity prices in the state by 150%.
- Trump’s attacks on clean energy hurt Texas’ clean energy economy, resulting in the cancellation of 28 clean energy projects, 52,332 lost jobs, and $6.7 billion in lost investment statewide.
- Trump’s Department of Energy canceled 53 clean energy grants, totaling nearly $1.7 billion, that were projected to create 5,165 jobs in the state.
- Trump’s clean energy cuts were projected to take 77 GW of generation capacity off the grid in Texas, threatening reliability and raising costs. As of November 2025, Texas had the most operating clean energy capacity of any state, at 90.2 GW.
- Trump’s cuts threatened at least $118 million in investment to improve the state’s grid, including a $30 million infrastructure grant for San Antonio and a $1.5 million power supply grant for Toshiba.
- An analysis by the Natural Resources Defence Council (NDRC) found that power-plant emissions spiked by 23% in Texas — the highest in the country — as Trump rolls back pollution protections.
