Two Years Later: Clean Energy Boom Brings More than 13,000 Jobs and $10 Billion in Investment to Ohio

Columbus, OH — Two years after the passage of the Inflation Reduction Act, Congressional Democrats’ clean energy plan is turbocharging the clean energy economy and revitalizing communities across Ohio. The clean energy plan has spurred the creation of over 330,000 new jobs nationwide, with Ohio home to the sixth-most new clean energy projects and tenth-most new clean energy jobs in the country. This clean energy boom is especially strong in Ohio, where over 5,000 new clean energy jobs have come to the state since March. Overall, twenty-eight new clean energy projects in Ohio have already spurred $10.47 billion in investment and helped create or move forward over 13,000 good-paying clean energy jobs. 

Ohio highlights:

• The Oak Run solar project was approved by the Ohio Power Siting Board in March 2024. The project, which includes 800 MW of solar generation and 300 MW of battery storage, will be located in Madison County, Ohio, and produce enough clean energy for 170,000 households. Once operational in 2025, the project will create 3,000 construction jobs. 
• Honda and LG Energy Solutions announced a $4.4 billion investment in an EV battery plant project in Fayette County, the largest direct private investment in Ohio’s history. 
• First Solar announced a $680 million investment to expand manufacturing in Ohio, creating at least 850 new manufacturing jobs statewide. In a statement, First Solar’s CEO said the clean energy plan has “entrusted [the clean energy industry] with the responsibility of enabling America’s clean energy future, and we must meet the moment.”
• In December 2023, Mobis announced that it would invest $13.8 million to assemble battery systems for electric and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles in Toledo, creating 185 manufacturing jobs.

“Ohio has made enormous climate and clean energy progress in the past two years, thanks to the Inflation Reduction Act,” said Carol Kauffman, President of the Ohio Environmental Council Action Fund. “The clean energy plan is leading to new jobs, a reinvigorated economy, lower energy costs for families, and cleaner air and water. This plan provides a clear path forward for Ohio, and I look forward to making even more progress in the next year.” 

“Congressional Democrats’ clean energy plan is bringing good paying manufacturing jobs to Ohio — uplifting local economies and lowering energy costs, all while lowering toxic emissions,” said André Crombie, Climate Power’s States Interim Managing Director. “From Cincinnati to Toledo, families and workers are benefitting from a surging clean energy economy. Meanwhile, Ohio Republicans in Congress have tried to repeal the Inflation Reduction Act over 30 times, even though the majority of new clean energy projects are in their districts, disproportionately benefitting their constituents.”
